                                            Online Practicum June 15th - June 25th, 2020

                                                      One door shuts another opens

Covid 19 struck NZ and the world changed.  Manaiakalani opened up yet another door and opportunity, by partnering with the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland, to participate in an Online Practicum.   The Faculty had contacted us for help with 110 Grad Dip. students, who could not complete  a face to face practicum. This was a challenge we could not resist, so working with the Head of Teacher Education, we put together an online distance learning Practicum. Enlisting the help of 28 teachers in the Manaiakalani clusters and outreach, we partnered them with groups of 4 Grad.Dip students, to complete a 2 week Pilot practicum. With the years of learning online being part of our programme, we were able to help the Faculty and share our expertise.  We did what we do best - connecting with students, whanau and our learning communities, making teaching and learning visible, using the affordances of digital technology and MEET to make this happen.

The ST’s (student teachers,) are experiencing a Practicum like no other attempted before. They are working with our amazing teachers, seeing the affordances of technology, led by pedagogy and kaupapa, in action. They are designing learning experiences and ‘seeing’ why we do what we do. With the generosity of our teachers, they are ‘seeing’ through a different lens, what connectedness, ubiquity, visibility and empowerment does for the achievement of our tamariki.

The Head of Teacher Education commented:

‘ I am really excited about this experience, and hope we can do it, or something like it, with each group that goes through the University, so that we do develop digitally fluent teachers for our schools.’ F.Ell, 2020.

This first week of Practicum has been meeting and greeting and getting to know the class and teacher. They are becoming familiar with sites leading the learning and the part blogging plays in the programme. They will also be commenting on the student blogs as part of their brief. They are designing collaboratively in their group, a maths or reading  task, which has come out of teacher inquiries. I will update you in the next Newsletter, week 2 and the outcome of this Pilot.
